After touring Rock Hound State Park we headed to lunch. Deanna had been searching on Google for a Mexican restaurant as there should be several good ones in or near Deming, NM. In looking about she stumbled across Elisa’s House of Pies and Restaurant a place which did not sound remotely close to Mexican cuisine but seemed very interesting. We decided to give it a try.
It took us a little bit to find the place. It is located down an alley behind a large Wells Fargo Bank. The alley is named Silver Street and the main street a half a block over is also named Silver Street. Google takes you to the main Silver Street and says “You are here” and the place is nowhere in sight. Driving around the block we found the place. It is actually a 114 year brick old carriage house that is really small but an incredible place.
As you can see it is not very big and as the sign out front indicates it is a “House of Pie and Bar-B-Q”. More appropriately it is Southern Cooking with lots of Barbeque Specialties excellent food preparation and fabulous pies.
This is an image of their house specialty recipe, JalapeƱo Corn Bread, which was fabulous. We were talking later about how tasty it would have been to make an entire meal out of just the corn bread but then we quickly realized how great tasting all the other items were that we tried and decided a balanced meal was a better option.
George ordered the barbeque brisket plate. It was pulled brisket. Elisa said they had been really busy that morning and they were out of ribs and many other items. Along with the brisket you get your choice of three other side dishes. George chose Collard Greens, Red Beans and Rice, and Black eyed peas. They were out of Okra so we could not try that. Deanna had the pulled pork plate and had Fried Cabbage that was wonderful, in fact all the food was wonderful.
Since it is partially called a house of pies we opted to try a piece of pie for desert. How can you go wrong? Of the several available choices we decided on the Key Lime pie. It had a strong but not over powering flavor and the graham cracker crust was nicely done. There was no whip cream smothering the offering which was the way it should be with such a great tasting pie.
Here in the background is Elisa. Very neat lady, a wealth of information and ready to answer any and all questions you might have.
This was on the wall in the small restaurant and we have seen various versions of this theme in different locations. Somehow this seemed appropriate for this place. There was a wonderful feeling to the restaurant and the central message of this sign seemed to sum it all up.
We will get back soon to try the ribs, other specialties, and of course a different pie. Maybe the Millionaire pie next time, we will see what they have available.
If you are ever in or near Deming, NM be sure and take time to find Elisa’a House of Pies and Restaurant. It is really well worth it. Elisa is a great lady, the food is wonderful, and the place is way beyond just good. Give it a try.
As always let us know if you have any questions or comments.
All the best – George & Deanna
